Keider Montero struggled again, but so did just about the whole team in this one. This was a rough day for the Tigers. They lost they best hitter to the injured list, and then their pitching staff was mauled by the Twins offense to lose the first game of the homestand by a score of 9-3.
After falling apart in June, the Tigers rallied well in July. Unfortunately it’s going to prove too little too late as the injury bug has decimated the roster at this point. Riley Greene went on the 10-day IL with a hamstring strain prior to this game, joining Kerry Carpenter, Casey Mize, and Reese Olson. With four of their best players out, making it through the next few weeks is going to be difficult. That’s before they sell off again for the eighth straight season. That was reflected in this game as Keider Montero was shelled, and other than Javier Báez, the offense really struggled with Twins number one starter Pablo Lopez.

After a successful road trip that saw the Olde English D go 4-3 out of the All-Star Break, the good guys return home. The Detroit Tigers split a four-game series this week with the Cleveland Guardians resulting in a tidy 4-3 record on their recent road swing to open up the second half of the season. The Motor City Kitties remain hot after entering the All-Star Break on fire, having assembled a 12-8 record in July putting them just two games under .500.
However, AJ Hinch’s team still has a way to go in a competitive American League East sitting 11 games behind the first-place Guards but only 5.5 games out of the final wildcard spot. The intra-division grind continues this weekend as the Tigers return home to host the second-place Minnesota Twins.
Below is a look at the pitching matchups for the next two games, with Detroit leaving Sunday’s starter open for a later decision.

Now let’s take a long break from the Guardians. The Tigers finally concluded their series against the Guardians with a day game on Thursday afternoon. The Tigers used a bullpen day to make their exit while the Guardians called on Gavin Williams.
In the first, Colt Keith got a one-out walk, followed by a single from Justyn-Henry Malloy. Both baserunners were left stranded, though. In the home half with Tyler Holton on the mound, Jose Ramirez doubled, but they weren’t able to get him home.
Bligh Madris singled to start the top of the second. Then Jake Rogers got a one-out single. Javier Baez then homered to bring in three runs.

Tigers scored early, but not often, in late-inning letdown. The Tigers continued their series against the Cleveland Guardians tonight with Jack Flaherty squaring off against Tanner Bibee.
Detroit wasted no time getting on the board, but it would be the only run they’d score all night (spoiler alert). With two outs in the first, Matt Vierling hit a solo home run.

Flaherty was also in a good groove as they headed into the home half, getting the Guardians out in order.
The second inning was three-up, three-down for both teams, and the Tigers also went without a runner in the top of the third. The bottom half of the third saw the Guardians get their first baserunner in the form of a Bo Naylor walk, but that was it, no runs scored.

Ty Madden once again was absolutely shelled into oblivion in this one. However, the ball was flying and the Hens crushed six home runs to run down the Bats and win in 10 innings.
Madden couldn’t get out of the third, after giving seven runs on 10 hits and a walk.
The teams exchanged home runs in the first inning. Madden allowed a two-run shot, and Spencer Torkelson and Dillon Dingler answered with solo shots in the bottom half. Madden allowed a solo shot to old friend Hernan Perez in the second, but Ryan Kreidler crushed a deep home run to center field to tie things 3-3.

This series did not go well. Organizationally the Twins strength is in hitters, the Tigers in pitchers, but the hitters won out, sweeping all three games in Minnesota.
On Friday, Matt Manning hit the injured list with a right lat strain, starting this series off on a bad note. Lael Lockhart Jr. struggled a bit in his outing, and the Saints bombed on the Hens bullpen and then held on against a late push to win.
Lockhart Jr. cruised for three innings, but then had a little trouble with the strike zone, walking three hitters, but the two home runs he allowed in 4 1⁄3 innings of work were the daggers. PJ Poulin gave up five runs in relief, three earned, with an error on Jace Jung at third base contributing to a five run sixth inning for St. Paul.

Kevin Gausman and Keider Montero struggled, but the Jays bullpen won out. The Tigers couldn’t quite pull off the sweep on Sunday. Both starting pitchers struggled, but the Blue Jays bullpen was a little better. Ultimately, a great defensive play by Daulton Varsho was the deciding moment, turning away the Tigers last attempt at a comeback as they lost 5-4. Still, the Tigers did win their fourth series in a row.
After taking the first two games of the series, the Tigers had a tough matchup on hand while looking for the sweep. RHP Kevin Gausman is tough, while RHP Keider Montero is still figuring it out, with a penchant for hanging a few too many pitches.
The Tigers got a single from Colt Keith and a walk to Riley Greene in the first inning with two outs, but Keith was picked off on a Gausman spin move to second base.
The first batter Montero faced in the bottom half was George Springer. In a 3-2 count a fastball down and in got blasted to Collapse

Lael Lockhart Jr. was brilliant on Thursday evening in Toledo. The lefty collected 14 whiffs, at least three with each of his fourseam, slider, curveball, and splitter, striking out nine while one-hitting the Bats over six innings of work.
The Hens built an early lead for Lockhart Jr. when Spencer Torkelson walked with one out in the first inning and Ryan Vilade followed with a single. Justice Bigbie stepped to the dish and drilled an opposite field double down the right field line to score them both. 2-0 Hens.
In the third, Akil Baddoo led off with a walk and Torkelson hammered a double to left field to get Baddoo to third, where he scored on a wild pitch. Tork was stranded but it was 3-0. Singles from Drew Maggi and Baddoo in the seventh led to another run on a Torkelson sacrifice fly.

The Tigers kept chipping away, but when you have to face a buzz saw for the ninth inning, that’s an uphill battle. After a comfortable series-opening win on Monday, the Tigers’ pitching-by-committee couldn’t quite tame the Guardians as they dropped the second game of their four-day weekday series 5-4 in Cleveland.
The Tigers had Ol’ Reliable, “TBA,” listed as the starter for most of the day. Eventually it was determined that Tyler Holton would kick things off on such a summer’s bullpen day; the reliable lefty out of the ‘pen has been lights-out off late. Don’t be fooled by his low-3’s ERA; that’s largely skewed by three outings in which he gave up 3, 3 and 5 runs. Other than those, he’s been a valuable multi-inning relief option who routinely comes in, mows down six hitters, and barely breaks a sweat.

In Cleveland it was All-Star Tarik Skubal on the mound against Carlos Carrasco, and the Tigers weren’t about to waste any time getting on the board.

The Detroit Tigers came out of the All-Star Break firing on all cylinders, taking two of three from the Toronto Blue Jays north of the border to continue one of the hottest current streaks in Major League Baseball. AJ Hinch’s squad has now won 10 of their last 13 games heading into a rematch with the American League Central leaders.
The Cleveland Guardians host the Olde English D for a four-game set this week starting on Monday as the home team looks to avenge its 3-1 series loss to the Motor City Kitties in Detroit a series before the ASB. The upcoming trade deadline, Carson Kelly’s impending free agency, and the success of top catching prospect Dillon Dingler this season, will all factor into the decisions that Scott Harris and Jeff Greenberg have to make soon.
Right now, it appears as though Carson Kelly is going to be traded by July 31.

Guess they needed three more games in Lakeland... We thought promotion season would kick off right after the MLB draft and the All-Star break, but Max Clark and Kevin McGonigle needed three more games with the Low-A Lakeland Flying Tigers to really be ready. On Sunday evening, the Tigers announced that their two top position prospects have been promoted to High-A West Michigan.
The 19-year-olds led the Flying Tigers to an excellent first half record, and continue to sit atop league leaderboards in multiple categories. Clark is currently ranked the 10th best prospect in baseball by MLB Pipeline, while McGonigle has been a rapid riser this season, up to 63rd in those rankings. Many would have him significantly higher up.
